Game Over

My car was broken into today.

I keep thinking of the many things surrounding the incident that could have unfolded differently to produce a different outcome.

What if our biggest client hadn't requested this one restaurant they used to have, for which we came to Dallas today to meet?  What if we hadn't decided to use the same menu that included soup?  What if the chefs didn't encourage us to go buy a special soup warmer?  What if we decided to run another errand instead of this one?  What if we parked in a different space (one of the employees told us later that previous break-ins happened at the same exact spot, which is coincidentally where I always park)?  What if the inventory specialist of the area that housed the soup warmer had found them immediately instead of taking 15 minutes to find the inventory his computer was reporting?  What if there was no line at the register?

So that's what happened in all the what ifs.  We were having such a good day.  Marcus was so happy because his computer had been broken & we just picked it up at The Apple Store from being fixed.  Since we were at Northpark Mall, we got to eat at my new favorite salad joint Snappy Salads.  We had a great productive meeting with one of our chefs.  We decided to be extra productive & pick up the soup warmer.  We were joking around, gallivanting through Restaurant Depot.

Then we gallivanted our way to the car.

It took me a second to figure out what that puddle of blue stuff was on the driver's seat.  Then I figured it out.  I immediately scanned the car for my computer.  It was still there.  As Marcus made his way from the back putting away our purchases, I called his name.  Staring at the glass, I called his name again as he opened the door.  Glass shattered onto the ground, in the seat & on the floor.  My computer is still here, is yours?

No it wasn't.  That's all they took.  Oh & the cash that was in the console, that we almost deposited before we decided the 11 car line was too long (another what if).

I stood in the door as the store manager told an employee that someone had moved the camera so it wasn't pointing at our car where it should have been, a fact he failed to disclose when he realized I was standing there.  Was it an inside job?

We called the cops.  The insurance company.  Our apartments to change the locks because we thought they took some keys. The other insurance company to report loss of personal property.  The glass repair people.

They probably parked on the driver's side that faced away from the building, went in & out, probably less than 30 seconds.  That's why they didn't have time to look on the other side of the car for my computer.

The surveillance video that won't have anything on it anyway will take 4-5 days to get & send to the detective.  The glass can't be repaired until tomorrow.  And my deductible is higher than the cost to replace it.  The deductible for the personal property -- $1000.  Poor Marcus won't have a computer for awhile.

What if his computer wasn't broken?  He never would have had his computer in the car.  What if Apple called yesterday when they promised they would?

What if I decided to hide my computer on the floor of the backseat?  They totally would have taken it.  What if they took my new breast pump that I just bought & have already gotten really attached to?  What if they took my computer?

What if they took my computer???!!!!!

I think I would have had a heart attack at 27 years old.

For that reason, I've spent the entire evening securing my computer, in case someone ever gets to it.

But listen you bastard thiefs, in case you're also computer savvy & somehow discovered my blog about being a mommy, I will never ever put my Mona (the computer) at risk again!!!
